I am Filipina – emailed to me today.
I always made it a point not to post twice in one day, but I just can't help myself. I have read this poem by a Filipina, purportedly emailed to the blogger. I could not help myself but raised eyebrows for the temerity of the writer of the poem to send something like that. I could not copy and paste it so just click the link above. I had to react violently of which I profusely apologize.
So why can't she go back to the land that she so love? From the looks of it, she is one of those Filipinas who happened to find someone, a foreigner maybe, who she thought would save her from the wretchedness (read:poverty) that she was in. Apparently, the relationship with this supposed hero did not turn out as she had previously expected. She was probably too naive or innocent, judging from what she mentioned that she married "young", as to discern what future awaited for her after marrying this guy.
The point is that she was merely looking at the facade. She was looking at the frontage of a house. The house looked beautiful, facing a green lawn and perhaps with children happily chasing each other. She decided to stay inside the house without checking every nook and cranny of the house to see if unsavory pests, like mice and termites were also living within the confines of the house. Then she found out the house was not as beautiful as she thought it was. So she came around strutting her miseries for all the world to hear. I don't mean to judge her, as I don't know her and I don't know what she might have gone through in life. But the situation is true for most of us.
After out debacle, we turn around and like a loose canon start to blame everyone or everything for our miseries. We are suddenly reminded that we actually have a country. That country suddenly became our scapegoat because we have no one else to blame for all distress. But remember, when everything was fine and dandy did we ever think our country? We suddenly find a lot of crooks in the government and then blame them for what happened without even realizing that we were once the crooks that we so hate today. When do we ever learn a thing?
